SALVIAMO I CANGURI!
Ricordate
la strage dei canguri per la loro pelle? Ne abbiamo parlato in passato.
Adesso, il Governo del Nuovo Galles del Sud (Australia) vuole permettere un’espansione
dell'area geografica in cui i canguri possono essere uccisi per commercio.
Questo provvedimento se posto in essere sarà di sicuro veramente pericoloso per
la sopravvivenza di alcune specie di canguri (soprattutto i canguri rossi che alcuni
gruppi conservazionisti stanno pensando di aggiungere alla lista delle specie
in pericolo d'estinzione a causa del loro esiguo numero). Quest'anno
l’Australia ha subito la più grave siccità della sua storia recente e come se
non bastasse è scoppiato uno dei più gravi incendi degli ultimi anni. A
causa di queste calamità naturali, le popolazioni di canguri hanno sofferto
molto. Gli scienziati hanno stimato una perdita tra 50% e 80% della
popolazione totale di questi animali a causa della sola siccità. La
caccia non fa altro che indebolire ulteriormente la popolazione dei canguri e
la rende più vulnerabile alle estreme condizioni climatiche australiane.
Il Governo sta per decidere nei prossimi
giorni quindi è urgente far sentire la nostra voce!

Dear Premier Carr,
I have learned that you are considering opening up new kangaroo hunting areas
in New South Wales. I am writing to urge you not to expand the hunting zones,
and to ask you to
consider banning the practice of kangaroo hunting altogether.
My understanding is that kangaroo populations have declined by as much as 80%
due to severe drought and fire. I have also read that extensive hunting has reduced
the average age of the red kangaroo, a species with a natural lifespan of 20 to
30 years, to only two years. If an effort is not made to preserve the remaining
animals, their populations may not be able to recover.
In addition to threatening kangaroo populations, the kangaroo hunt is extremely
inhumane. Baby joeys are ripped from their mother's pouches and are stamped on,
decapitated or hit with a metal pipe. Older joeys are left to die, and there
are reports that at times, mature animals may be skinned alive. I urge you to
put an end to this industry which incorporates these brutal practices.
As a Compassionate Traveller, I choose to travel to countries that strive to
protect their native animals and preserve the wild areas that they need to
survive. I would love to travel to your country, but until the barbaric kangaroo
hunt has been stopped, I will refrain from visiting Australia or buying
Australian products.

Forum Universale delle Culture, che si terrà a Barcellona nel 2004, si prefigge
di diventare un evento di importanza storica e planetaria. Fra i principi e i
valori del Forum è compreso: “l’impegno etico, sociale e ambientale”. Questo
principio però non è ancora esteso ai tori che vengono torturati nell’arena di
Barcellona. La Dichiarazione municipale sulla convivenza e i diritti degli
animali approvata dalla giunta di Barcellona il 23/10/1998 sostiene che gli
animali “non devono essere sottoposti a maltrattamenti”. Risulta evidente
l’incompatibilità di questa affermazione con le gravi sofferenze di cui sono
vittime i tori nelle corride organizzate nell’arena di Barcellona.

CANI E GATTI IN COREA
Riceviamo e facciamo nostro l’appello della Korea Animal Protection Society (www.koreananimals.org), associazione per la protezione degli animali coreani che ci spiega come il Governo coreano (sud) sia intenzionato ad approvare una legge che aumenterà a dismisura l’uso di cani e gatti come cibo destinato agli esseri umani, di seguito la presentazione in inglese del problema da parte della Korea Animal Protection Society ed una lettera di appello che vi chiediamo di inviare al Primo ministro coreano ed al Ministro dell’agricoltura.
**URGENT** Please send protest letters to Korean government as often possible; please tell your friends to do the same!
For the past year, KAPS/IAKA and animal friends from around world have been lobbying the Korean government to not adopt a draft law which would recognize two classes of animal - pets and livestock. Dogs and cats would not be excepted from their definition and would therefore be "raised" as livestock for human consumption. KAPS has argued that dogs and cats need to be a special category, recognizing their longstanding role as companion animals, that could not be raised as livestock. Nevertheless, the Korean government appears to be determined to adopt the new law and has set in motion a process that could result in it being approves by the Korean National Assembly in July 2004.
This, of course, is terrible news. If this law passes as planned, only dogs and cats raised explicitly as pets will be protected. Not only does this mean that dogs and cats raised for human consumption will have no protection from abuse whatsoever but it also allows for any dog abuser to get away with torturing these animals, legally, just as long as he claims the animal is not a pet.
We are asking you to send as many protest letters as possible to Korean President and the Ministry of Agriculture. This matter is most urgent, as the Korean government has already set up a time-line for the introduction of this new law: the law will be drafted and then sent to Korean Animal related organizations for review in February 2004, before being passed on to National Assembly. Please write protest letters in both email and regular mail and encourage others to do so, too. (President Roh Moo-Hyun does not have an email address. If you try emailing the Minister of Agriculture and the message does not go through, please consider sending a letter through the mail instead.

Dear Minister of Agriculture Huh Sang-man,
I am appalled to learn the Korean Government is currently drafting an amendment to the Animal Protection Law of 1991, making a distinction between certain breeds of dogs as meat-producing livestock animals and other breeds as pets. In the draft law, the definition of pet animal is an attempt to give legitimacy to dog and cat meat. The dogs and cats are protected only if people raised them purposely as pet animal. This means that any dog or cat purposely raised for food will not be protected. Not only does this deprive protection to animals who are raised for food or medicine but will also result in a situation where the law cannot punish any animal abuser who claims that their dog or cat was raised for any purposes other than pets. In 1991 your own government acknowledged that all dogs, not just certain breeds, were entitled to protection from cruelty, mistreatment, and abuse. Any amendment leaving dogs and cats purposely bred for food or medicine without protection would be a grave injustice and a major setback for the animal protection efforts in Korea.
If this new law passes, it would make Korea the first and only country in the entire world to explicitly legitimize dog meat, legally sanctioning dog and cat killing for human consumption. This would bring a great mark of shame to your country, especially when the overwhelming majority of the rest of the world has banned dog-meat, including Taiwan, Thailand and the Philippines. In fact, Taiwan has recently strengthened their law to ban the killing and selling dogs as food. Almost every other country in the world, especially those as developed as Korea, is moving forward with animal protection laws. Why do you want to embarrass your country and let it be known as the only country taking a step backwards?
Our boycott of Korea's bid for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games was successful. After choosing Vancouver, Canada, as the host city, the International Olympic Committee sent letters to International Aid for Korean Animals and The Korea Animal Protection Society asking them and their supporters to stop bombarding their offices with protest cards. I promise that if the proposed amendment to the Animal Protection Law of 1991 passes, we will do everything in our power to se that Korea will loose all of its bids to host any major event, including all international sporting events and World Expositions. I, and my many animal loving friends from around world, will send protest letter after protest letter informing the organizers of such events as to the horrors that take place inside Korea, letting them know that they should reconsider before choosing Korea as a host city.
All Dog and Cat are companion pet animals and should not be raised for human consumption.

Come sapete, la BUAV (British Union Against
Vivisection, lega britannica contro
la vivisezione), in collaborazione con l'organizzazione animalista tedesca Menschen für Tierrechte (esseri
umani per i diritti degli
animali), ha organizzato un'indagine segreta in uno dei più grandi laboratori di vivisezione europei, la Covance
di Münster, dove ogni anno vengono
torturate più di mille scimmie.
I risultati dell'inchiesta, che ha
documentato con filmati e fotografie
atroci maltrattamenti sugli animali, sono stati resi pubblici di recente, sul sito www.buav.org
Contrariamente al solito, le autorità non
hanno fatto finta di niente: in
particolare il ministro dell'ambiente del Land Nordrhein-Westfalen ha fatto sapere che sta prendendo

mit Entsetzen habe ich durch den Bundesverband
Menschen für Tierrechte e.V. von
den unhaltbaren Zuständen im Tierversuchslabor Covance, Münster, erfahren, die erst durch eine Undercover-Aktion
der
Britischen Union zur Abschaffung von Tierversuchen
(BUAV) aufgedeckt worden sind.
Die Beweise aus der Undercover-Untersuchung
machen deutlich, dass sowohl in
der Tierschutzgesetzgebung als auch bei der Überwachung erhebliche Defizite bestehen und dass es für Firmen wie
Covance offensichtlich ein Leichtes
ist, gesetzliche Bestimmungen zu ignorieren.
Bei der Firma Covance wurde - das zeigen die vorgelegten Beweise deutlich - systematisch gegen die bestehenden
gesetzlichen
Bestimmungen verstoßen, sowohl was die Haltungsbedingungen
angeht, als auch den Umgang mit
den Tieren.
Ganz offensichtlich waren die Ihnen nachgeordneten Kontrollinstanzen, insbesondere das zuständige Veterinäramt, nicht in der Lage, die Missstände bei Covance aufzudecken und abzustellen.
Entsprechend müssen die Verantwortlichen mit der ganzen Härte des Gesetzes bestraft werden.
Ich möchte Sie dringend bitten, alle rechtlichen
Möglichkeiten auszuschöpfen, die
Verantwortlichen zur Rechenschaft zu ziehen.
Insbesondere muss der Leitung von Covance die Genehmigung zum Halten von Versuchstieren wegen mangelnder Zuverlässigkeit entzogen
und damit die Einrichtung geschlossen
werden. Ich bitte Sie, mich
über die von Ihnen angeordneten Maßnahmen zu informieren.

a conoscenza e di porre fine
agli abusi della Covance. Di conseguenza è necessario che i responsabili vengano puniti con
tutta la forza della legge.
Desidero pregarla con urgenza di far uso di
tutti i mezzi che la legge
mette a Sua disposizione per fare in modo che i responsabili vengano chiamati a rispondere delle loro azioni. In
particolare, è fondamentale che
all'amministrazione della Covance, che si è dimostrata del tutto inaffidabile, venga ritirata la
licenza a
detenere animali da esperimento e che di
conseguenza lo stabilimento venga
chiuso.
